I really had no idea what to expect when reading this book. I didn't even read the synopsis before buying it, only the review from Amy Poehler on the cover. Many of the reviews were good, so I just went for it! If you haven't read this book yet, I'd stop here. I don't want to spoil anything for you! With that, let's go to the discussion!
1. Some books take me a while to get into, but not this one. I was hooked from the beginning. I couldn't wait to see how to the drama of the family played out and ended up finishing it within a couple day. How was it for you? Did you Plump family capture your interest right from the start?
2. How did you feel about the narration from the different family members perspectives? I loved it. Sometimes, when I'm reading, I want to hear the story from someone else. See how the other characters saw something or to hear their side of the story. I think it made the story much more interesting to hear from not only all the Plumb siblings, but other characters, like Louisa and Tommy, as well.
3. Which character did you relate to the most? It can be hard to relate to this family, because there is so much dysfunction, but I'm curious if you felt a connection with a particular character.
4. Did you enjoy the ending? Like I said before, I had no what to expect when I started this book, but it quickly had a lot of dysfunction and drama. Right from the start, there were some pretty major problems taking place. Through out the book, the family issues just kept happening. I was enjoying it, but I wanted something good to happen to this family. Man, was I happy with the ending! It was so great to hear that the family settled into life after Leo. It might not have been how they were expecting things it go, but it seemed like everything fell into place after they got out of the hold that Leo had on them. I was curious to hear more from Leo and about what his life was looking like, what he did after leaving New York, how he felt about the baby, etc. But like the Plumb family, I think we had to move on from Leo too. Not only did I get the happy ending I was hoping for, we also got to see little sneak peeks of the future for the Plumb family.
I, obviously, really enjoyed this book. I recently read some reviews on Goodreads and I know others didn't feel the same. Let me know in the comments how you felt about the book! I think it would be really fun to read a novel from Lila perspective. I want to see how she views the family without the influence of Leo, but also to see how Leo comes back into the picture and how he's involved with Lila's life. Thanks for joining the book club this month. See you at book club next time! xo- Laura
